Want to be more pro-active about what you give to charity? Don’t have time to volunteer but want to be able to do something real? Can’t get out and want a worthwhile project you can do at home? Want to do something the kids can get involved with? There are many ways of giving to charity beyond simply doling out money (although charities do need this too). Here are some great ideas for ways that you can make a difference by doing something real for charity.
Shoe Box Aid
Shoe box aid is an initiative started in 2001 by Smile International. The idea of the Christmas Shoe Box is to give a gift box to a disadvantaged child in a deprived region. The charity ships thousands of shoe boxes filled with age and sex appropriate gifts and wrapped in gift paper to disadvantaged children all over the world. The website tells you what kind of gifts are suitable to put in your box – these include items like soap, crayons, combs, note books and small toys. Children love to get involved and feel that they are reaching out to someone in another country.
Knitting for change
If you like knitting or crocheting then Knit a Square might be the charity initiative for you. Knit a square collects knitted squares to make into blankets for Aids orphans. Their website has details of the size of squares required and where to post them to. For a charity closer to home you might think about knitting for Oxfam. Oxfam sells hand knitted items like blankets, hats, gloves and jumpers in its shops and at music festivals – where a hand knitted blanket can sell for as much as £35. More details can be found on their website.
Loving Hands
Loving Hands was started in 2007 by Lou Jaap. Loving hands brings together knitters and sewing enthusiasts from around the world. The website has a list of current projects and patterns and is regularly updated. There is also an online forum where you can chat to other crafters. Loving hands currently has more than eight thousand members and supports many charities in the UK and abroad. Current projects include knitted blankets, toy sheep, hats, summer clothing for children in Africa and quilts and coats for dogs.
Sew good
If sewing is more your cup of tea you might want to look at Making for Charity. Making for charity is looking for crafty people interested in volunteering England or across the UK to make pretty fabric bags for holding syringe drivers for cancer patients or making personal effects bags for delivering personal effects to loved ones. These items have been requested by Macmillan nurses.

Charity knitting initiatives are too numerous to mention here but if you want a bigger list go to the website of the UK Hand Knitting Association where you can find lots of fun charity knitting projects ranging from knitting Staffies for Battersea Dogs’ Home to knitting animal and insect puppets for schools in Nigeria, and a whole host of other things besides.

Creative Giving Challenge #3:An Extra Week-What Will You Do?

Occasionally a year will have 53 Weeks, but most have 52 to 52 and a half. I just looked at the calendar on my cell phone today and it listed 53 full weeks. Granted that the 53rd comes between Christmas and New Year's Eve, how will you spend your extra week? You could spend a few hours of the week volunteering at a local charity or have an extra week to send donations in in time for an IRS deduction. These are a few ideas. Most folks will be busy celebrating the holidays and entertaining friends and family- My challenge is not to spend the whole week volunteering or donating but at least a few hours or even 1 day of the week. We don't often get extra time, but here is one of the ways that we do. Remember that when I challenge you-I also challenge myself. So what will you do? I'm not sure what I will do yet. Please let me know in the comments.How have you done with the past 2 challenges/ Did you finish them? It's okay if you didn't do them on time- but these are projects to inspire you and me to give more. I didn't finish the last one. I've had a really bad cold for nearly a week- but I'm going to catch up when I'm feeling better.

Ellen DeGeneres and Walgreens are working to make sure that kidss in need aren't left out this Christmas. If you are planning to see The Ellen DeGeneres Show in person , now through December 17th; she is requesting a donation for Toys For Tots or a local charity. If you aren't planning to go to the show, you can still participate by donating online or bringing a new toy to your local Walgreen's. All of the info is on the link below;

Creative Giving Challenge # 1:Raid Your Kitchen!

Before you cook that turkey for Thanksgiving or plan your Black Friday Christmas shopping, go to your kitchen and prepare to raid your refrigerator and pantry. Go to the pantry first with an empty cardboard box and put any canned goods that you don't plan to use in the next 2 months. This food is to be given to your local food pantry. Once the box is full, label it and put it in the back seat or trunk of your car and take as soon as possible to your nearest food bank. You can find your closest food bank at Feeding America's website.The next part of "..your mission should you decide to accept it...,"
is to raid your refrigerator. Be sure to get rid of any food in your fridge or freezer that you suspect might be bad and throw it out! This time go through your food and check to see if it can be used in a casserole or other recipes that you can cook and freeze ahead and take to a sick fruend or neighbor , or to an elderly friend who might need company and a good meal, or to a funeral or other occasion. If you find some odd ingredients, many recipe websites such as Krafts, Allrecipes, and food,com have a search by ingredient feature. Go and let me know what happens!
